The Lone Star Region is hosting the VCCA Area 6 Fall Joint Tour at Athens, Texas September 15 – 18, 2011. We welcome all VCCA members of Area 6 and any other VCCA member that would like to join us. We will be touring the back roads of this beautiful East Texas countryside. Bring your VCCA Touring Passport.
The Joint Tour begins on Thursday, September 15. The Holiday Inn Express in Athens is our host hotel and check-in time is 3:00 PM. Tour packets will be available in the lobby. Dinner will be on your own, and an ice cream social and welcome reception will begin at 7:00 PM in the hotel meeting room.
On Friday, we will tour the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens. This unique aquarium and hatchery complex offers fun and education in the natural environment of East Texas. Take a tram tour of the outside hatchery and see the underwater dive show.
That afternoon, we will drive out to the country for a picnic lunch (bring lawn chairs). After lunch, we will tour the East Texas Arboretum. You can sit and relax in the shade or walk through the park to see the exhibits and enjoy the seasonal gardens.
Arrangements have been made for our group to have dinner Friday evening at the Lake Athens Marina Restaurant which overlooks beautiful Lake Athens. The restaurant is known for the best fried catfish and burgers in town. A room has been reserved for our group, but you will order from the menu and pay for your own meal, or you can have dinner on your own at another restaurant of your choice.
On Saturday, we will drive the back roads to the nearby Canton area for a tour of Hatfield Restorations. You can visit the shop and see various stages of restoration of many vehicles. Then we will drive into the town of Canton and have lunch at Papadales Grill. Enjoy the buffet with your choice of Mexican food, American food, salad and assorted desserts.
In the afternoon, we will gather in downtown Athens for a group photo on the steps of the Henderson County Courthouse and visit a few shops around the square. On Saturday evening, we will conclude the event with a Farewell Banquet at the Athens Country Club.
The Lone Star Region looks forward to hosting this year’s event, and we hope you will plan to join us in Athens.
